Barking Mad

It was an honour for campaign co-founder Matt Tiller to visit Barking FC last weekend for a book signing of The Lion Who Never Roared.

Matt chatted to supporters, club staff and players about Jack’s time at Barking from 1919-21. One of Jack’s final games for Barking Town FC, as it was called then, was the London Senior Cup Final of 1921, when Barking defeated Dulwich Hamlet 4-1 (after extra time!) at the Old Den in front of 15,000 fans. One spectator changed Jack’s life… Plymouth Argyle manager Bob Jack who signed Jack and two of his teammates shortly after.

Barking’s current president, David Blewitt, remembers his late father Fred saying that, ‘Jack was the greatest player he had ever seen play for Barking in his 60-plus years of watching the Blues.’

It was a great day as Barking beat Ilford 5-0 to equal its longest unbeaten run of 17 matches. Thanks to Mark Harris for organising and interviewing me and Harry Bamotra for videography. Nice work.

Matt also had the honour of presenting defender Kenedi Dariri with a salver to mark 100 senior appearances and a copy of The Lion Who Never Roared.
